Seafood is the term used to describe edible animals that do not belong under the category of vertebrates. The best-known seafood includes shellfish, squid, shrimp, crab and lobster.
Seafood lives in salt water, but there are also some, such as crayfish, that live in fresh water.
The name of seafood can be traced back to the influence of the Romans, as they considered seafood a gift from the gods and accordingly worshipped it as the fruit of the sea. Especially, shells were attractive to them, which is confirmed in various appearances of shells in ancient mythology.

Seafood is divided in several, different types like saltwater fish, freshwater fish and shellfish. If you think of seafood, you probably come up with mussels, tuna and salmon. Which definitely are one of the most popular seafood dishes. But there are definitely more, interesting recipes to try out, like oysters and shrimps.

China is the country which is most known for seafood. Each year, the country consumes around 22 million metric tons of seafood. Japan, Indonesia and South Korea also eat a lot of seafood. These countries have a large coastline and plenty of fresh water to support their fishing industries. Seafood is an important part of these countries‘ cultures and diet.
Is seafood healthy?
Seafood is usually not only low in calories, it also contains many vitamins, minerals, trace elements as well as omega-3 fatty acids and is leaner than meat, but still contains a lot of protein. That's why most nutrition experts recommend adding seafood to your diet on a regular basis.
The vitamins that seafood contains include vitamin A, vitamin B2, B6, B12 and a small amount of vitamin D. The minerals contained in seafood are iron, phosphorus, zinc, calcium, magnesium and Iodine. Due to these ingredients, seafood is said to have a positive influence on the brain, heart and sleep quality.
However. caution is advised for allergy sufferers. Symptoms in the mouth and throat area, such as itching or swelling, are particularly common among allergy sufferers. But vomiting or stomach cramps can also be the result of an allergy to seafood.
